The Thunder Look Ready To Run It All Back

Remember last season, when the Oklahoma City Thunder smacked their name on to the NBA Title winners list?

From the looks of it, out in the Western Conference, the Thunder, led by MVP favorite Shai-Gilgeous Alexander are looking poised to run it all back once again this season, currently leading both their conference standings, as well as our Western Conference champions odds rankings at -145.

Even after having to go through a stint without SGA and other key players from the starting lineup because of different injury issues, the Thunder have not slowed down their pace whatsoever, keeping a lock on the top position out West, keeping a three-game difference over their closest competitors, the San Antonio Spurs, a difference that from the looks of it, is already out of reach.

And the thing about the Thunder is, from everywhere you look, this team holds an edge that seems unobtainable for any other team in the league.

They hold the best overall defense and offense as well as both the best home and away records.

In short, this is a team that you could have playing on the moon and they’d still be pinned as favorites, it’s as simple as that.

Fear The Spurs & Nuggets, Keep An Eye On Rockets

Looking to weather out the storm and Thunder (pun totally intended), there are three teams that could potentially, on a good day, no no, wait, not a good day, a close to perfect day offer the Thunder a true run for the Western crown, starting with the Spurs at +230 odds.

Ever since Tim Duncan and coach Pop’s days no Spurs team has looked as utterly dominant and plain scary as this season’s, led by generational talent Victor Wembanyama.

Standing as the only team this season that can truly brag about having OKC’s number, having beaten them four out of five times, San Antonio has shown that while it thrives with Wemby, even when the French big man is out, there’s so much depth within the roster that it can stand up to any challenge.

Coming in third place of our NBA conference finals odds out west, it’s the Denver Nuggets at +540 odds.

Assuming you don’t live under a rock, you’ve probably seen over and over again how Nikola Jokic continues to redefine what a center looks like in the league.

Thanks to Jokic, long gone are the days of big men being immovable objects just acting as walls. With some of the smoothest handles in the game and averaging a triple double for the season, if this final stretch of the season has shown NBA fans anything, it’s that when Jokic is in his element, he automatically shifts the momentum in every game the Nuggets play, as showcased by the team’s current 10-0-win streak.

Capping off our list of intriguing top-notch contenders for OKC’s current title, my money is on the Houston Rockets at +2700 odds, especially with how they’ve taken to finishing the season, winning their last seven games in a row.

Trying not to be biassed because of my love for Kevin Durant, this Rockets team, especially when playing at home stands as the toughest challenge for any opponent, no matter where they sit in the league standings.

Houston’s no-nonsense style of basketball, with a focus on thriving on offense has pushed them to be one of the hottest teams in the league right now, even while having to count Fred Van Fleet and Steven Adams out for the rest of the season.

My only concern with Houston comes from their inability to react when facing clutch moments. But if the Rockets can get the best version of KD in the playoffs, I’d be scared to face them.

Lakers and Timberwolves Are Up In The Air

Oh how the mighty have fallen towards the end of the season, the mighty being the Los Angeles Lakers, who currently have +12000 odds to win the Western Conference title.

With such lengthy odds, you might wonder why I’d consider them sleepers.

Well, hear me out for a second.

Before seeing Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves be sidelined for the remainder of the regular season, this Lakers team was thriving, cruising to be deemed as a favorite for the title following a 16-2 record.

Sadly, following both Doncic and Reaves’ respective injuries, the hype around LA took a dive, losing their following three games and seeing their odds start to crumble.

With both players expected to miss from four to six weeks following their injuries, a potential return for a second-round playoff run could happen, leaving the room wide open to wonder what if?

Lastly, with +2200 odds please welcome the Minnesota Timberwolves.

If I’m being completely honest, as long as the TWolves continue to struggle with consistency and relying so much on Anthony Edwards, who’s been dealing with injury issues in the final stretch of the season, unless Minnesota can muster up enough confidence and commitment to trying and pushing for a true and serious playoff run, I would fade their odds and not look back.
