Who’s ready for a little UFC action up in the Northwest?

While salmon gets flung over at Pike Place Market, over at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle the UFC will be bringing another Fight Night event with the main fight of the night pinning middleweight studs Israel Adesanya vs Joe Pyfer.

With UFC betting odds already out and about not only for the main event but for the whole main card and prelims as well, let’s get right to talking about which fighters look best to leave Seattle with another “W” in their record.

Is Adesanya Fighting On Borrowed Time?

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve thought about Israel Adesanya. Am I the only one who remembers when “the Last Stylebender” was the hottest ticket in UFC?

Anyways, after taking a considerable slip in his career losing four of his last five fights, there are plenty of UFC fans who truly believe Adesanya is fighting on borrowed time, especially in his upcoming Fight Night main event bout against Joe Pyfer.

But come on, I think we can all agree Israel is still, by far, one of the cleanest strikers in the game, and probably the best hitter in the history of the middleweight division.

With a 24-5 record, while it’s safe to say losing on Saturday won’t lead to him getting dropped by Dana White’s promotion, any remaining hopes of mounting a career comeback with championship fight aspirations could take an almost deadly blow.

So, what should Adesanya do to show he’s anything but done in the division?

Yes, beating Pyfer. But how?

First of all, let’s get one thing clear. Yes, he’s lost four of his last five fights, but he hasn’t lost any of them against any run of the mill bums.

He lost and then came back right after to win against Alex Pereira, who for many is the best fighter in the world right now. After that, he would go on to lose against Sean Strickland, Dricus du Plessis and Nassourdine Imanov.

Coming back to his fight against Pyfer now, if Israel wants to win here, the strategy is quite straightforward, he’ll need to channel his old self, the one that was highly elusive, with superb lateral movement and smooth as silk stance switches, which would usually lead to his opponents drowning in frustration and disruption.

Expecting a one-blow win from him has never been a thing and won’t be on Saturday, but if Adesanya can weather Pyfer’s early attacks and above all stay on his feet, he should have enough in the tank to beat Pyfer and make a strong case for a career revival arch.

And Pyfer?

I’m glad you asked.

The 29-year-old Pennsylvania native is coming into this fight ready to crush any lingering hopes Israel may have. With a 15-3 record, and holding a very, very hard punch, striking alone won’t get him a win here.

To win Pyfer will need to find a way to keep Adesanya under siege, with non-stop pressure, backing Adesanya against the cage and unleashing all his power, be it body shots, leg kicks, whatever comes in handy.

Only if Pyfer can slow Adesanya down and mark the pace of the fight in his favor will he have a true chance at winning. If he can’t do it and finds himself chasing Israel and swinging like a kid going at a piñata, it’s game over.

UFC Fight Night: Adesanya vs Pyfer Main Event Betting Pick

Coming up with a UFC prediction for this fight basically boils down to one thing: distance vs pressure.

Whoever controls that wins the fight.

Considering what both fighters can bring into the cage though, if Adesanya is able to put forth his mobility and striking volume above Pyfer’s aggression-filled fighting style, I have to go with Israel winning in the end.

Don’t call it a comeback. Or do. But take Adesanya to win straight up at -150 odds.
